Drinks
We have
gone to great lengths at Roast to source not only British ingredients
for the kitchen, but also for the bar.
All the spirits
and ingredients on our drinks list have British ties, with extensive research
having been carried out to select the very best examples of Britain influencing
the drinking world.
Take rum.
Gosling's famous Bermudan rum distillery was founded by English wines
and spirit merchant James Gosling, who only ended up there after being
diverted by a storm in 1806 whilst on his way to Virginia. Mount Gay,
the smooth golden rum from Barbados, is named after the distillery's founder
Dr William Gay who was English.
We have also
tried our best to harness both the flavour and history of our spirits
in our cocktails. The Jammy James, for example, celebrates not only James
Gosling's luck at landing on Bermudan soil, but also seasonal British
produce such as rhubarb.
It's not
all about heritage however; our alcohol producers are some of the most
forward thinking in the world. British sparkling wines such as Ridgeview
are now challenging the finest that France's Champagne region has to offer.
We also promote products like Blackwood's Vintage Gin, which is flavoured
entirely using botanicals grown on the Shetland Isles, and harnessing
the natural local flavours of meadowsweet, sea pink flowers and wild water
mint, and varying each year depending on growing conditions.
We also stock
a fine range of one of Britain's true success stories, whisky.
We have been
producing whiskey in the British Isles since at least the 15th century,
and at Roast we celebrate the diversity of our native spirit by stocking
soft, elegant whiskies from Speyside, robust peaty malts from the island
of Islay, and Penderyn, the sole Welsh offering to the world of whisky.
But it's
not just about distillation; let's not forget the long brewing heritage
we have in Britain. It wasn't long ago that people in the four corners
of the globe were being refreshed by British Ales, Stouts and Porters,
and at Roast we have a range of beers that reflects that heritage.
