Art We are currently exhibiting artwork by renowned artist Chila Kumari BurmanBorn in Liverpool by Asian immigrants Chila started to express an interest in art at an early age. Chila says that since the mid-1980s she has been exploring the experiences and aesthetics of Asian femininity in paintings, installations, photography, printmaking, video and film. Her work is informed by popular culture, Bollywood, fashion, found objects, the politics of femininity the celebration of feminity; self-portraiture exploring the production of her own sexuality and dynamism; the relationship between popular culture and high art; gender and identity politics. Chila's father had an ice-cream van, quite unusual for an Asian immigrant, and she recalls spending most her childhood around ice creams, helping her father out which reflects a lot in her art. We can always see an ice cream, a cone, hidden or not in her paintings. chila-kumari-burman.co.uk |
